Our Programs

The Institute offers a wide range of opportunities for individuals to contribute to future strategic challenges, network with peers across the national security community in Australia and Internationally, and for professional development. 

Our program of events is listed below.  Closed research workshops and high level briefings are by invitation and priority is given to Governors and Chairman's Circle members as appropriate.

Research Workshops

Utilising our distinctive collaboration-based research methodology, we produce comprehensive – yet succinct – research papers that focus on long-term, complex challenges that affect our region. Our papers gain national and international press coverage, and are major intellectual contributions to important debates in our region.

Strategic Dialogue

As an unsurpassed annual gathering of hundreds of high level dignitaries, officials, academics and leaders from cross the Asia-Pacific region, our Strategic Dialogue program aims to drive greater levels of understanding, rapport and cooperation through extensive dialogue opportunities around a mutually important theme.

These Strategic Dialogue events have proven to be exceptional opportunities for building strong relationships across the region and has fostered a sense of cooperation and partnership among our international guests. Events during the  Dialogue include workshops (public and closed), an invitation-only retreat, and our annual gala dinner. Past attendees have included the Australian Defence Minister, Ambassadors from the US, Japan and Indonesia, and Commanders of Pacific Forces from the US.

IFRS  Annual Dinner 

Held as part of the Strategic Dialogue the annual dinner is open to the public. Previously we have drawn key speakers from the Australian Prime Minister and other senior ministers, to ambassadors and senior military officers from the Asia Pacific region and the USA.  The dinner, for around 300 people, is attended by the most senior leadership across the national security community from both Australia and internationally. 

The annual dinner  should be a priority for all organisations and individuals with an interest in the future security within the Asia Pacific region or with Australia’s relationship with the United States.  

The 2015 Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday 3rd September.  Details will be posted on our Events page and emailed to members in due course.

Seminars, Colloquiums and Special Events

On an almost-monthly basis, the Institute hosts a series of seminars, colloquiums and special events for VIPs, members and the general public alike.

Previous events include collaborations with other organisations on topics such as business readiness concerning cyber security, alarming research into liquid fuel security, and a series of panel discussions on the White Paper development process.

Future Strategic Leaders' Congress

The FSL Congress aims to foster the development of esprit de corps amongst Future Strategic Leaders.  The Congress is run twice a year over a weekend and is a great opportunity for future leaders to engage with senior experts and decision makers as well as peers from across the national security community, in a relaxed informal environment.  The weekend fosters the professional development of future

leaders through seminars, workshops hypothetical/s and informal discussions.

National Security Careers Night

The IFRS National Security Careers Night is an exclusive careers night for university students, graduates and young professionals who work in the national security community or aspire to do so. The Careers Night provides future leaders with valuable insights into the national security community, featuring presentations on the roles, activities and professional development opportunities in major government organisations.

The Careers Night is an annual event and is usually in March when most of the represented organisations are recruiting for graduate programs and internships.

Women in National Security (WiNS)

WiNS aims to present positive role models and encourage women to take up careers and leadership roles within the national security sector, a traditionally male-oriented field. Speakers reflect on a range of topics, including career management, barriers, juggling the demands of work with family and other commitments, followed by an open question and answer session and informal networking.

IFRS Next

Next is our innovative ideas forum, organised by the Future Strategic Leaders’ Committee, and is an opportunity for future strategic leaders to shake and shape Australia’s security thinking with their thinking, insights and perspectives. Next attracts a sell-out audience made up of senior government and military leaders, industry, academics and members of the public.

Executive Business Breakfasts

Our Executive Business Breakfasts series is designed for mid-career national security professionals to grow their capacity for senior leadership roles. These breakfasts offer a confidential and open discussion with a senior keynote speaker on matters ranging from career development to current international affairs. Previous speakers have included current heads of agencies, politicians, and current military service leaders.

Participation is by invitation and priority is given to Governors and Chairman's Circle members as appropriate.
